Incentives Offered to Raise College Graduation Rates

In what amounts to a ‘Race to the Top’ for higher education, the U.S. Department of Education is offering competitive grants to help states increase their college completion rates.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said the program would offer incentives to states and schools for reforms aimed at achieving the administration’s goal of adding eight million college graduates by 2020. ”

We all know that the best jobs and fastest-growing firms will gravitate to countries, communities, and states with a highly qualified work force,” Mr. Duncan said.

Both English and mathematics teachers are more likely to rate the ability to write clearly and persuasively higher than mathematical ability as absolutely essential for college readiness, according to a new MetLife Foundation survey.

Merit’s College Prep Software can help students benefit from the new initiatives planned by the administration. Merit has a long track record of working with colleges to help improve students’ writing skills.

Persuasive Writing Ability Key for College, Career Readiness, Teachers Say

Both English and mathematics teachers are more likely to rate the ability to write clearly and persuasively higher than mathematical ability as absolutely essential or very important for college and career readiness.

This is one of the key findings in a report ”MetLife Survey of the American Teacher: Preparing Students for College and Careers” that was released earlier this month.

Seventy-five percent of middle and high school students now say it’s very likely that they’ll attend college, and teachers predict that 37 percent of their students will need remedial coursework to prepare for college, according to the authors.

On IBM’s Watson and Educational Technology

IBM’s Watson computer recently crushed the competition on the popular game show “Jeopardy.” One can’t help but wonder about the current and future role of technology in education.

During the competition Watson was able to access answers to a variety of questions. However, it wasn’t superior to humans on every question. The machine did better in certain categories than others.

It’s important for us to think about what computers can and can’t do. Computers can’t create without input from humans. They can only respond to human programming.

Lack of Emphasis On Reading, Writing Impedes College Student Learning, Study Says

A new book, “Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses,” says many students are not learning anything in U.S. colleges.

“Courses, oftentimes, are not rigorous enough to help students develop their analytical and critical thinking skills,” say the authors.

Student surveys show, for example, that 32 percent of students each semester do not take any courses with more than 40 pages of reading assigned a week, and that half don’t take a single course in which they must write more than 20 pages over the course of a semester.

Further, the authors note that students spend, on average, only about 12-14 hours a week studying, and that much of this time is spent studying in groups.

Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior

The essay Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior recently published in the Wall Street Journal has garnered a lot of attention

“Can a regimen of no play-dates, no TV, no computer games and hours of music practice create happy kids? And what happens when they fight back?” asks the author.

“Western parents worry a lot about their children’s self-esteem. But as a parent, one of the worst things you can do for your child’s self-esteem is to let them give up. On the flip side, there’s nothing better for building confidence than learning you can do something you thought you couldn’t.”

Merit Software provides the tools and opportunities for all parents to improve their children’s academic skills.

Assessments place students at a suitable level of challenge and difficult concepts are broken down into understandable parts. The programs are personalized, self-paced and self-advancing. Learners gain confidence as they work.
